Metal Core PCB vs FR4: Which One to Choose?

ByAlice June 13, 2023June 17, 2024

Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) are the backbone of modern electronics. They provide a
platform for electronic components to be connected and communicate with each other. PCBs
come in different types, and two of the most popular ones are Metal Core PCB and FR4 PCB.
Both have their advantages and disadvantages, and choosing the right one can make a
significant difference in the performance and reliability of your electronic device. In
this article, we will compare Metal Core PCB vs FR4 PCB and help you decide which one to
choose.

What is Metal Core PCB?

A Metal Core PCB (MCPCB) is a type of PCB that has a metal core, usually made of aluminum
or copper, instead of a traditional FR4 substrate. The metal core provides a better thermal
conductivity than FR4, which makes it ideal for high-power applications that generate a lot
of heat. MCPCBs are commonly used in LED lighting, power supplies, automotive electronics,
and other high-temperature applications.

Advantages of Metal Core PCB

1. Better Thermal Conductivity: The metal core in MCPCBs provides better thermal
conductivity than FR4, which allows for better heat dissipation and reduces the risk of
overheating.

2. High-Power Applications: MCPCBs are ideal for high-power applications that generate a
lot of heat, such as LED lighting and power supplies.

3. Durability: MCPCBs are more durable than FR4 PCBs and can withstand higher temperatures
and vibrations.

4. Low Thermal Expansion: MCPCBs have a low coefficient of thermal expansion, which means
they are less likely to warp or crack due to temperature changes.

Disadvantages of Metal Core PCB

1. Cost: MCPCBs are more expensive than FR4 PCBs due to the cost of the metal core
material.

2. Limited Availability: MCPCBs are not as widely available as FR4 PCBs, which can make
them harder to source.

What is FR4 PCB?

FR4 is a type of fiberglass-reinforced epoxy laminate that is commonly used as a substrate
material for PCBs. FR4 PCBs are widely used in consumer electronics, telecommunications,
and other low-power applications.

Advantages of FR4 PCB

1. Cost: FR4 PCBs are less expensive than MCPCBs, which makes them a popular choice for
low-power applications.

2. Availability: FR4 PCBs are widely available, which makes them easy to source.

3. Easy to Manufacture: FR4 PCBs are easy to manufacture and can be produced in large
quantities.

4. High Dielectric Strength: FR4 PCBs have a high dielectric strength, which makes them
ideal for high-voltage applications.

Disadvantages of FR4 PCB

1. Poor Thermal Conductivity: FR4 has poor thermal conductivity, which makes it unsuitable
for high-power applications that generate a lot of heat.

2. Limited Temperature Range: FR4 PCBs have a limited temperature range and can only
operate within a specific temperature range.

3. Low Durability: FR4 PCBs are less durable than MCPCBs and can be prone to warping or
cracking due to temperature changes.

Which One to Choose?

Choosing between Metal Core PCB vs FR4 PCB depends on the specific requirements of your
application. If you need a PCB for high-power applications that generate a lot of heat,
then a Metal Core PCB is the better choice. On the other hand, if you need a PCB for low-
power applications, then an FR4 PCB is the more cost-effective option.

In conclusion, both Metal Core PCB and FR4 PCB have their advantages and disadvantages, and
choosing the right one depends on your specific application requirements. If you need help
deciding which one to choose, consult with a PCB manufacturer or engineer who can provide
expert advice and guidance.
